What key funnels are, and when to use them
A few funnels that matter, counted from steps your backend reports, and how they differ from a full analytics tool.
A funnel is a short journey your users take, step by step: they sign up, set up a project, invite a teammate, pay. Outcomify counts how many people who started reached each later step, how long it took them, and whether that changed.
Key funnels are made for the few journeys that matter most, the ones you would put on a slide to say whether the product works. They are free, and they sit next to your opportunity solution tree, so a step can be tied to the opportunity it is about and the solutions meant to move it.
How the numbers get in
There is no script on your website and no SDK in your app. Your backend tells Outcomify that a person reached a step, with one HTTPS call:
POST https://api.outcomify.com/api/funnels/track
You send the step's name, such as signed_up, and your own id for the person. Outcomify hashes the id before storing it, and keeps only the first time each person reached each step. Sending the same step again changes nothing, so you can call it whenever the step happens without keeping track of who you already reported.
Because nothing runs in the browser, there are no cookies, ad blockers don't lose you data, and bots don't reach your numbers.
What you get
- Conversion from the first step to the last over the last 7, 30 or 90 days, against the period before, with a margin of error. See Read the report.
- Each step: how many people reached it, their share of the step before, and the typical time it took.
- Step trends: week by week, whether a step got better or worse. See Step trends.
- Your tree: link a step to an opportunity or a solution, or make a funnel an outcome's metric. See Connect funnels to your tree.
When to use something else
Key funnels answer a few questions well. They don't record every event, page view or property, so they can't answer questions about events you never sent, split people by plan or country, or replay sessions. If you need to explore everything people do, use a product analytics tool alongside. Many teams keep both: the analytics tool to explore, Outcomify for the handful of numbers that decide what to build next.
Where to find it
Open Funnels in the sidebar of your workspace. The first time, the page shows Send steps from your backend: the key and the call to start with. Continue with Send your first steps.
